How to Care for Your Beeswax Candle—So It Burns Longer and Cleaner

Candles bring a cheerful brightness to your day. Candles made from beeswax are especially beneficial as they purify the air. Beeswax candles last a long time too—and even longer with some simple care tips.

Choose the Best Candle Placement

The right candle placement is important for safety and keeps your candle lasting longer. Here are a few tips:

  • A stable, heat-resistant surface is best. Ceramic, glass, or metal surfaces work well, but avoid wood, plastic, or fabric surfaces. A stone surface may be okay if the stone is flat and smooth. You’ll want to avoid uneven surfaces so the candle doesn’t tip over.
  • It’s best to keep your candle away from fans, vents, open windows, or any other source of drafts. Moving air causes flickering and smoke, which is unsafe and also causes your candle to burn too fast and unevenly.
  • Place your candle out of reach of children and pets for safety.
  • You’ll want to keep your candle away from flammable materials, like curtains and papers.

A countertop or mantelpiece can be a great spot for your beeswax candle. A coffee table works well too, as long as it’s not cluttered with flammable items, too close to a fan, or has children or pets racing by.

Burn the Candle Long Enough

Your candle will last longest if the wax burns evenly. You may have noticed how a burning candle creates a tunnel in the wax right around the wick. If the tunnel grows deeper, the wax around the sides won’t be used.

To keep your candle lasting longer, you’ll want the wax to melt evenly across the surface. If the candle burns long enough, the top layer of wax will melt and even out; the tunnel will disappear.

Burning a candle for one hour per inch of diameter will help the wax melt evenly.

What happens if you need to extinguish the candle before the whole surface melts? See if you can burn it longer next time to help the wax even out.

But what if you only want to burn a candle for short periods of time? A great option is to choose a smaller candle. The smaller the diameter, the less burn time needed for a full surface melt.

Tea lights are helpful if you want a really short but wonderful candle burning experience. They melt faster and are affordable and easy to replace. They purify the air and provide gentle essential oil fragrance.

You can burn one tea light at a time, or burn several in a holder designed for multiple tea lights. These affordable little candles create a wonderful atmosphere.

Extinguish Your Candle with a Snuffer

Since our earliest birthdays, we’ve learned to blow out candles. But when you blow on a candle, you’ll get smoke, soot, and splattered, melted wax

The best way to extinguish your candle is to use a candle snuffer. Choose a snuffer that comfortably fits your hand and fully covers the flame without touching the wax. Your candle snuffer will help your beeswax candle last longer.

Keep the Wick Trimmed

To keep your beeswax candle’s flame steady and clean, you’ll want to trim the wick to 1/4 inch before each use. A trimmed wick prevents soot, smoke, and uneven burning. That means a safer, longer-lasting candle and a pleasant candle-burning experience.

Store Your Candle Well

A candle lasts longer when it’s stored properly. You’ll want to store your beeswax candle in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Choosing cool, dry storage keeps the wax from melting, warping, sweating, and weakening, prevents wick damage, and helps essential oil scents stay fresh.

These simple tips will help you get the best life and enjoyment from your beeswax candles—for many more bright and cheerful days.
